What will I be doing?
This is a practical course where you’ll study subjects including:
- Working in a recording studio using Pro Tools/Logic Pro X
- Arranging and composing using Logic Pro X
- Lighting and live sound
- Music technology in performance including Ableton live and DJ skills
- Music production techniques and mixing skills
- The music industry
It is preferable that you play an instrument or have a good knowledge of basic music production. You’ll need to demonstrate this in your interview/audition.
The course is delivered through a blend of:
- Practical sessions and workshops
- Classroom activities
- Group work, as a whole class or in specialist groups
- Self-directed study
- Personal tutorials
The first-year students will be running the studio as a business throughout the year, gaining experience of realistic work in the industry and working on different projects with Media/Game Design/Performing Arts. Creating Music material in Logic Pro X and developing DJ Skills/Ableton live for a live show at the end of the year.
Second year students take responsibility for setting up and running a full PA rig and lighting system for weekly workshops in the theatre. There are also 6 major music evenings open to the public, which will also be run by second year students. Students also create and release their own music promoted through website that the students individually create.
You'll be continually assessed, mostly through practical assignments, with written work underpinning the skills being developed as a music student. You’ll achieve:
- Level 3 in Music Technology
- Skills Activities
- Maths and English
- Other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set
What is expected of me?
You'll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, to include either Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language, or an appropriate Level 2 Diploma qualification at Merit Grade with GCSEs to include either Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language at Grade C or above.
Full commitment to attendance is required, as well as respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject, self-motivation, creative ability and a desire to succeed.
What comes next?
Successful completion of the Year 1 90-credit Diploma will allow you to progress to the second year and complete the full Extended Diploma. From there, progression routes include:
- A Foundation Degree in Music Technology (available at Crosskeys Campus)
- Degree or higher national diploma courses at other HE providers
- Employment in the music industry at a junior level
Additional information
As part of the entry requirements, you’ll be expected to attend a taster session where you’ll take part in an audition.
