In a nutshell

This is a one-year, full-time course for learners who would like to gain a broad introduction to the principles and practices of engineering technologies. The course aims to equip students with the necessary theoretical and practical training for them to obtain the Level 1 Diploma in Engineering Technologies.

This is a vocational qualification which is designed to offer learners the opportunity to progress to a higher level of study and to prepare them for employment in the engineering sector.

What will I be doing?

To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, including:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Working in Engineering (mandatory unit)
  • Unit 2: Introduction to Machining Engineering Materials
  • Unit 5: Introduction to Electronics
  • Unit 6: Introduction to Electrical Installation
  • Unit 7: Introduction to Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance
  • Unit 13: Introduction to Basic Maths and Science used in Engineering
  • Unit 15: Introduction to Computer Aided Drawing (CAD)
  • Unit 16: Introduction to Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
  • Unit 17: Introduction to Engineering Project Planning

Text reading, lectures, taking notes in class, practical sessions, using ICT and our digital learning platform – Canvas.

How is the course assessed?

Unit 1 (mandatory unit) is assessed by an online external exam. All other units are assessed by knowledge and practical tests marked by lecturers

What is expected of me?

To enter the course, you’ll need a minimum of 4 GCSEs, Grade E or above, to include Maths at Grade D and English/Welsh First Language or an appropriate Entry Level qualification.

You'll need to be numerate, creative, have a keen interest in engineering, be self-motivated, hardworking, punctual and committed.

What comes next?

  • Study for a Level 2 City & Guilds or BTEC qualification in engineering.
  • A career in engineering. Typical job roles include: Mechanical Fitter, Electronic/Electrical Technician, CNC operator, Toolmaker or Fitter/Turner.
  • The qualification can facilitate progression to a range of Engineering Apprenticeships or relevant employment.

You’ll develop essential employability skills such as self-management, team working, business awareness, customer awareness, problem-solving, communication, basic literacy and numeracy and a positive attitude to work.

You’ll need Personal Protective Equipment, such as boots and overalls, the cost of which is approximately £40.00. You’ll also need to supply your own stationery and folders.
