OurÌý°ä°ù´Ç²õ²õ°ì±ð²â²õÌý°ä²¹³¾±è³Ü²õ Hair and Beauty departmentÌýrecentlyÌýhosted some special guests from the popularÌýconsumerÌýTV show, BBC X Ray.ÌýWithÌýindustry-standard facilitiesÌýand expert tutors inÌýtheÌýmake-upÌýand beautyÌýsector, Â鶹´«Ã½AV was the ideal place to film an episodeÌýallÌýabout theÌýgrowingÌýissue ofÌýcounterfeit make-up.Ìý

Spending a full day on campusÌýusing our makeup and hair studiosÌýas a filming location, presenter Bethany delved into the world ofÌýfakeÌýmake-up, discussing how itÌýhas become aÌýconcerningÌýand wide-spreadÌýissue in theÌýbeauty industry.ÌýNot only doesÌýcounterfeitÌýmake up damageÌýhigh-endÌýbrands and their reputations,Ìýbut it is also a danger to consumersÌýand beauty therapists alike, so it’s an issueÌýthatÌýour learners need to be aware of.Ìý

The problem is growing as more and more ‘fake-up’ is being sold online, especially through social media and via online market places, and this is something our learners have come acrossÌýduring their studiesÌýtoo. So, BBC X Ray took a closer look at rising concerns around counterfeit make-up.Ìý

As part of the episode, some of our passionate beauty students andÌýHND Specialist Makeup CourseÌýCo-Ordinator, Karen Coates, were interviewed and askedÌýaboutÌýtheir views on fake make-up. They discussed their experiences of coming across counterfeit products when looking to purchase beauty kits for teaching and learning, andÌýalumni, LizÌýOrfordÌýwas also interviewed by the BBC.ÌýÌý

After completing her courseÌýat Â鶹´«Ã½AV, Liz went on to set up her own successful beauty company and has experienced her fair share of the dangers of counterfeit make-up. She’sÌýeven come across sub-standard beauty training offers too. So,ÌýLiz isÌýnowÌýpassionate about sharing her experiences with learners. SheÌýbelieves that the high-standard of training at Â鶹´«Ã½AV is key in educating the beauticians of the future toÌýraise awarenessÌýof counterfeit make-up and the risksÌýit canÌýpose.Ìý

AlthoughÌýcounterfeitÌýproductsÌýappear to beÌýcheaper versions of high-end brands that are packaged to look the same,Ìýthey’re often poor-qualityÌýreplicaÌýproducts that are made in unsanitary conditions. They’reÌýalsoÌýcompletely unregulated, so they may even contain potentially harmful ingredients. Some of the horror stories revealed in the BBC X RayÌýprogrammeÌýincludedÌýproducts containingÌýtoxic ingredients likeÌýarsenic, cadmium and lead, leading toÌýallergic reactions, rashes and burns.Ìý

BBCÌýX RayÌýdrew on expert opinionsÌýfrom the beauty industryÌýand our tutors and students,ÌýrevealingÌýinsider information to help us uncover the dangers involved andÌýthe bestÌýways of identifyingÌýcounterfeitÌýmake-upÌýtoÌýavoid falling into the trap of purchasingÌýit.ÌýÌý
